Asian Games athletics: read a 4x400m relay result

Four legs, one team time and one event medal. Understand the relay clock without treating it as an individual 400m result.

Four runners share one race

A 4x400m relay has four athletes running 400 metres each while passing a baton. The team covers 1600 metres in total. Its published finishing time is the combined race time, not the fastest runner's individual 400m time.

Olympics.com's relay explainer describes the last runner as the anchor. A result showing the team's athlete names tells you who took part; it does not automatically provide each runner's split time.

Read minutes, seconds and hundredths

India won the women's Asian Games final on September 29 in 3:29.69. Read that as three minutes, 29.69 seconds. Bahrain finished in 3:30.21, so the winning margin was 0.52 seconds.

The 3:29.69 belongs to Kiran Pahal, Poovamma Machettira, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj as a relay team. Dividing by four can give an arithmetic average, but it does not reveal their measured individual splits or account for rolling starts.

Do not mix different relay events

India's men won bronze in a separate 4x400m final in 3:01.61. Women's, men's and mixed-team events have separate results and medals. One relay gold adds one gold to the country's event tally, rather than four because four athletes ran.

Use the official final result and any penalties, not merely a live clock, to identify the medal order. This guide does not infer a national record, personal best or selection from the finishing time.
