Asian Games archery: compound scores and shoot-offs

Read team totals, mixed-team scores and tied finals without confusing arrow points with set points.

Start with the discipline and event

At the Asian Games, a compound team result such as 238-234 is an accumulated arrow score. It is not the same kind of score as a recurve match decided on set points. The event name matters before the numbers make sense.

World Archery explains that compound individual matches use 15 arrows, team matches use 24, and mixed teams use 16. Each arrow can score up to ten, so the normal maximum is 240 for a three-person team and 160 for a mixed team.

Why 238 can decide a gold medal

India's women beat China 238-234 in the September 30 Asian Games compound team final. That is a four-point difference over the match, not four sets. The men's team won a separate final 238-237.

Using a hypothetical example, a team ending on 237 from 24 arrows is three points below the possible 240. That arithmetic says nothing about the sequence of arrows or whether a particular athlete missed the ten ring.

Keep the shoot-off separate

India and South Korea tied 157-157 in the compound mixed team final. The official report records the deciding shoot-off as 20-19. The regulation score and shoot-off score describe separate stages; adding them into 177-176 would hide the tie-breaking method.

World Archery explains recurve using a set system: the individual winner reaches six set points, while teams reach five. Do not apply those thresholds to the cumulative compound totals. Check the bowstyle and event label every time.
