Commentary

  • Bangladesh have been left with a lot of questions. But we feel we have answered your questions about this game. We will be back soon with more cricketing action soon. Bye for now.
  • Raza (3/3): And if we have won today, hopefully this is a start of many more wins to come. And regardless of whether I’m the captain or Richard (Ngarava) is the captain, when we put on this jersey, the aim is to win, regardless of who’s leading the side. So this win is as good as the other wins that other captains have got, and I’ve been part of it. So a win is something that we enjoy and we take a lot of pride in enjoying. [On the conditions] I think this is our first tour to the subcontinent in this weather. And I think the weather has hit us hard. I think it’s going to come down to mental toughness and discipline from all of us together. We’re going to have to pull each other, help our teammates to do the right things, because in the next 36 hours, not even 36 hours, we’ll be back here trying to put everything on the line for our country. So it’s very important that we do the right things. Keep your voice, get that body right.
  • Raza (2/3): [On the fielding and catching] Certainly, because we spent a lot of time and we have lost a lot of games because of our fielding as well, and we want to be known as a good fielding side. I think fielding is something that is non-negotiable. Fielding is something that’s within you. It’s about attitude. It’s about how much you’re enjoying being out in the middle with your teammates and how much you want the fight with the opposition. So I think fielding is something we can control. Dropped catches, misfields happen here and there, but if your attitude is good and if you’re going for every ball, eventually when things work out, things click, all those catches that don’t stick starts to stick, and I think it’s due to great attitude these boys have got and the culture we have. [On the milestones] I don’t care about these things, to be honest. 100 international wickets is certainly something that, more than me, I think my teammates would be proud of, the family and the fans would be proud of. It’s been a long journey, but it’s just another milestone. But these are the things I don’t really care. Yes, not winning as a captain, I don’t care, but being part of the team and not winning at all is certainly that hurts me the most.
  • Sikandar Raza | Zimbabwe Captain (1/3): I thought after the shaky start, that partnership (between Taylor and Ervine) held the innings together really well. We’ve looked at the last ten games and all the data as well. So getting to 271 is certainly a good effort. But I thought those two boys, Wellington and Newman, cricket being such a momentum game, I thought they gave us some momentum, and that was very important to finish the first innings on 271. At least it gave us something to bowl at, and also looking at the stats as well, 265 has been a par, so I was pretty happy with 271. [On the bowling] I thought Blessing was very unlucky. I thought Bless was bowling well. We needed two guys to bowl well together. We have been guilty in the past as well, where two guys haven’t really bowled well, one guy’s bowling well and the other not, and that’s something we will discuss, and we need to get better at in international cricket. But I thought the character shown, because they were ahead of the game after the 15 or 14 overs, they were only two down, close to 100 runs, and the way we came back and we fought back was certainly something that I’m very pleased about.
  • Towhrid Hridoy | Bangladesh Captain: [On the first innings, the team's strong start with the ball, and what went wrong as the innings progressed] Actually we bowled really well. It's a very decent wicket we get to bat on here. So as a batting (unit) we did a couple of mistakes. We had a very good start, but in the middle we didn't well. [On whether he was satisfied with the bowling effort and the fight back to restrict Zimbabwe to a total the team believed it could chase] We could have chased. As I mentioned earlier, our bowlers did really well. As a batting (unit) we should take responsibility, we should be able to chase totals like this. [On the team's decision-making with DRS reviews, following difficulties with reviews in the Test match and again in the ODI, and whether it is an area that needs improvement] Obviously we will talk about it, but sometimes we need to trust the bowler and the umpire as well. [On whether the batting performance was disappointing or the conditions made the chase difficult] Obviously disappointing. It's very good wicket, very decent wicket to bat on here. We actually made silly mistakes. So hopefully we will overcome from here. [On the significance of becoming his country's ODI captain for the first time, despite the defeat] it's a proud (moment) for me and proud for family as well. So hope it will continue.
  • Craig Ervine | Player of the Match: I think obviously getting the win in the end. I think all the work that went into the batting innings, getting the reward at the end with the team getting over the line. Most certainly. I think obviously at this stage you sort of take each game as it comes [On getting a 100 at the age of 40]. It's nice to be in a bit of form, obviously coming off the Australian series, scoring some runs there, and then starting like I did today, I thought was great, and hopefully that can continue. No, it's always special batting with Brendan Taylor. I think he's always had that calm sort of air. And I thought the way he started his innings, I thought was really composed. Didn't get flattered too much, I think with the strike rate and that, and then obviously built up and got the momentum back on our side. [On the conditions] I think at the start it obviously swung around a little bit, a little bit of nip off the seam, and then I think once that sort of worn off, I think we kind of decided that now's the time to sort of up the ante a little bit, and I thought our partnership was really good, especially once the spin came on. I thought we kind of scored quite freely. A couple of times we got a little bit bogged down, but I think with the experience and that, not panicking under pressure and continuing and building a big partnership, which was the difference. [On the small gap between two matches] Certainly, definitely feet up tomorrow.
  • Brad Evans: Nice to finish in that way. Tanzid has had the better of us in the last few white-ball series, he's a good player and tough to bowl at. But I think the message we had in the change room was to give your best. You never know what happens in white-ball cricket, the ball flies. Just gave our own and came up best. (On Shanto's dismissal) Nice ball, I don't know why he sent it upstairs. It was nice to come back like that, I just tried to hit the wicket and it paid off. (On the off-field camaraderie) Cricket is all about partnerships: batting, bowling and even fielding. We're great mates in that dressing room, always supporting each other's backs, whenever we bowl or bat, we do it for each other. (on Sikandar Raza's first win as ODI captain) We might have some beers in the change room, but we'll be back in the middle in two day's time.
  • 22:35 Local Time, 18:35 GMT, 00:05 IST: Zimbabwe have notched up a massive win. Bangladesh would be gutted. They had Zimbabwe on the ropes when they started bowling. But Taylor and Ervine rebuilt it and managed to help their team get beyond 270. Bangladesh with the bat never were in the chase with the bat barring the first 10 overs. Post that they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and in the end fell short by a huge margin. Evans was the pick of the bowlers and picked up four wickets. The spinners - Raza and Muzarabani - also snared up 2 wickets apiece. Bangladesh will want to go back to the drawing board as far as their batting is concerned. Zimbabwe will welcome the points and the massive face lift to their NRR.
  • 33.4: Brad Evans to Mustafizur Rahman, out Caught&Bowled!! Slower one, angled in, Mustafizur Rahman looks to clip it and gets a leading edge. The ball lobs back to the bowler. Easy take. That was at the sticks, Mustafizur Rahman wanted to close the face of the bat and spooned a leading edge. Brad Evans finishes with a four-fer. Massive win for the Zimbabwean team as they win by 99 runs. Mustafizur Rahman c and b Brad Evans 6(6) [6s-1]
  • Brad Evans to Mustafizur Rahman, THATS OUT!! Caught&Bowled!!

  • Brad Evans [6.0-1-40-3] is back into the attack
