Commentary

  • That brings us to the end of today’s coverage! Harry Brook stole the spotlight in the first innings, smashing his maiden ODI double century to propel England to their eighth 400+ total in the format. However, Sri Lanka responded with an even more remarkable effort, pulling off the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history. It was a truly memorable contest. All eyes will now be on England as they look to bounce back when they face Pakistan in Lahore in their next outing. Goodbye and take care!
  • Kusal Mendis | SL captain: [You've persisted with having chasing as the preferred option, and you proved everyone wrong tonight?] Yeah, of course. We won the toss in five games, and every game we chased because of the dew factor. And with the ball, firstly, we've done really a couple of times in very good areas, and every match we have done really well with the ball in the first innings, and we chased very well today. As a captain, I have enjoyed today's innings. [On their approach] Yeah, of course. Me and coach were talking a little bit, as batters we had to play a couple of overs normally. Then we had to look when we're going forward, how to play. Then we decided Dasun came in earlier. I think the guys batted really well. Everybody showed character and took responsibility. That's why we chased 430 runs I think. Even Avishka, Pavan, Dasun, Janith batted really well. Everybody showed character and I'm very happy as a captain. [You were comfortable watching or did you chew off your nails?] Yeah, I think everyone believed we can do it. Every day we are in the meeting, we are talking about character and we believe in ourselves. Everybody knows how to play, and we showed that we can play and score in today's chase. I think I'm very happy. We will have a small party, but we have to focus on the next game.
  • Harry Brook | England captain: [What did you make of the game?] Incredible game of cricket. I thought both teams were exceptional. Sri Lanka just outplayed us, unfortunately. We couldn't quite hit our straps with the ball and played into their strengths a little bit, and again they played exceptional cricket to knock off 400. I think you said first time in 20 years is an incredible achievement, so fair play to them. [On his knock] Yeah, it's nice to things. Unfortunately, it doesn't mean anything now, being on the losing side. It has no value whatsoever in my eyes. [Tougher conversations ahead?] Yeah, we've got to go back to the drawing board a little bit. No, we know where we've gone wrong. Unfortunately, we didn't execute well enough with the ball. We've got a great opportunity in the next couple of games to try and nail down a spot in the final. And yeah, we've got to go back to keeping things simple and backing ourselves and pick our chins up and go again next game.
  • Pavan Rathnayake | Player of the Match: Very happy. Important win for our team. [What was the conversation like?] So we think wicket was very good. So we back our normal game, that's it. [On the partnerships] Yeah, very good team game. I think every partnership played very well. [You think this 100 is the best so far?] Yeah, this one. Hundred percent.

  • 21:16 Local Time, 16:16 GMT, 21:46 IST: What a game this has turned out to be! Chasing 429 was always going to be a monumental task, but Sri Lanka have pulled off the unthinkable. This has to rank among the greatest run chases of all time! South Africa’s famous chase of 434 set the benchmark, and now Sri Lanka have produced something equally extraordinary. An absolutely phenomenal effort from Sri Lanka. Earlier in the day, Harry Brook lit up the contest with the fastest double century in ODI history. But in a remarkable turn of events, Sri Lanka have managed to outdo even that extraordinary feat with a sensational run chase. Avishka Fernando provided the perfect launchpad with a blistering 97 at the top of the order, while Rathnayake chipped in with a magnificent century to lay the foundation for Sri Lanka’s record run chase. It was Dasun Shanaka’s explosive 97 off just 50 deliveries that truly swung the momentum in Sri Lanka’s favour, turning an already remarkable chase into something truly unbelievable. Shanaka, like Fernando, fell agonisingly short of a century, but Janith Liyanage rose to the occasion with a career-defining knock, holding his nerve to steer Sri Lanka home in a thrilling finish in the final over. Tongue’s double strike briefly threatened to turn the game on its head, but Liyanage held his nerve under immense pressure, delivering when Sri Lanka needed him the most..
  • 49.5: Josh Tongue to Janith Liyanage, SIX, Janith Liyanage does the unthinkable. Second ever highest run chase in ODIs. Sri Lanka's highest ODI run chase! The Sri Lankan players charge on to the field and hug Janith Liyanage. They lost two wickets in the final over, but he has thumped this over long-off to seal the fate of his match. Such a crucial strike under pressure. Pitched up the bowler around off, right into the slot, and Janith Liyanage smokes it over the boundary to pull it off
  • 49.4: Josh Tongue to Asitha Fernando, 1 run, no hat-trick for Josh Tongue. And Liyanage is back on strike. Width on offer outside off, Asitha Fernando slashes away from his body, gets an outside edge towards third man. A fumble in the deep, but they stick to a single. 6 runs needed in 2 balls
  • Asitha Fernando, right handed bat, comes to the crease
  • 49.3: Josh Tongue to Eshan Malinga, out Bowled!! Two in two for Josh Tongue. He's on a hat-trick. Full and quick from round the wicket, Eshan Malinga goes for a straight drive, plays down the wrong line, and the middle stump has been uprooted. 7 runs needed in 3 balls. They need Liyanage to get back on strike. Eshan Malinga b Josh Tongue 0(1)
  • Josh Tongue to Eshan Malinga, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!
  • Eshan Malinga, left handed bat, comes to the crease
  • 49.2: Josh Tongue to Dunith Wellalage, out Bowled!! Is there a twist in the tale? Pitched up by the bowler from round the wicket, hint of swing, Dunith Wellalage goes for a wild swing, misses it altogether, as the middle and leg stumps goes for a toss. Looked like an ugly slog, and the batsman has to pay the price for it. This match is going right down the wire. All three results still possible. England can win, Sri Lanka can win, and there's a chance of a Super over as well. Dunith Wellalage b Josh Tongue 8(7) [4s-1]
  • Josh Tongue to Dunith Wellalage, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!
  • 49.1: Josh Tongue to Janith Liyanage, 1 run, on the shorter side, a slower one, Janith Liyanage pulls it towards deep mid-wicket for a single
  • Josh Tongue [8.0-1-71-1] is back into the attack
  • Equation: 8 runs needed in 6 balls
  • 48.6: Jamie Overton to Janith Liyanage, 1 run, that was full and quick on middle and leg, drilled to long-on by Janith Liyanage for a single
  • 48.5: Jamie Overton to Janith Liyanage, no run, much needed dot ball for England. Full and quick outside off, Janith Liyanage goes for a flashy drive, and gets beaten. Taken by the keeper at chest height, good amount of carry
  • 48.4: Jamie Overton to Dunith Wellalage, 1 run, dragged through the leg-side by Dunith Wellalage for a single. 9 runs needed in 8 balls
