Commentary

  • Smriti Mandhana has her first ODI series win as India's full-time captain. Zimbabwe's progress has been slow but steady, and they have just one more opportunity to prove that the spark they have shown on this tour is no fluke. Harmanpreet, Deepti and Vaishnavi all had memorable outings today, while the visitors will be pleased to have crossed the 200-run mark for the first time on this tour. Can they sign off with a win on Wednesday, or will India complete another clean sweep? Do join us for the third and final game of the series to find out. Until then, it's cheers and goodbye from Raju Peethala, Mukesh Gowda, Kiran Nataraj and Sagar Chawla. Cheers!!
  • Harmanpreet Kaur | Player of the Match: As I said, I just want to enjoy my batting... Yeah, that's what I did, and that's what I want to keep doing. [On her approach after walking in at 19 for two and whether she consciously targeted the off side more than the leg side] Well, today we were playing an ODI format, and in ODI format, you have to act differently and that's what Pratika and I both decided that we have to respect if they're bowling in the right areas...and at the same time, if we're getting any loose ball, we have to punish that, and I think it was a very simple and clear message we gave each other, and then just reacting. [On dealing with the emotions of the past few weeks and mentally preparing for a fresh start in the next phase of his life and career] Well, I'm somebody who always likes to live life close to reality, and this is the reality now, and I just want to accept it in whatever way it is. And at the same time, cricket is something which has always given me happiness, and batting is something which is, you know, something I've been enjoying throughout my career. And today, and whenever I'm going to step in, I just want to enjoy my batting. [On whether her current batting form makes her miss captaincy less] When you're batting, you don't think these kinds of things. When you're batting, you're batting as a batter, and you want to take responsibility for the team. So I'm somebody who likes to take responsibility and bat according to the situation, and no matter whatever the situation is, I just want to enjoy myself. [On her physical condition after batting for nearly 45 overs in the afternoon heat] Yeah, definitely. I actually had a mild fever last night. That's why I was struggling when we came back to the field, and I just wanted to, you know, take some rest. And I think the painkillers, everything, are helping me, and hopefully I'll come back stronger.
  • Smriti Mandhana | India skipper: Today's biggest positive, from 19/2, to get 300-plus - credit to Harman, Pratika, and Deepti the way they batted. Was brilliant to watch. She's (Deepti) been batting brilliantly. Even in the ODI World Cup, she had a lot of match-winning knocks for us. Unfortunately her number is such that she doesn't get long overs, but really happy the way she went about it today and got her hundred. Vaishnavi was brilliant, she was varying her pace and changing the angles. She knows her game very well which is always good to have as a captain. And the other bowlers chipped in as well. In white ball cricket, I think 4-5 overs is still a long spell considering the heat. Of course today it was not that hot. Otherwise as well, you don't want the batters to get used to it. The kind of quality we have in our bowling line-up, they can come in and bowl in good areas any time. As a batter you don't want bowlers changing. Zimbabwe were brilliant in the field and they stopped nearly 20-30 runs, especially in the point area. Brilliant to watch. I mean it's really hot out there in the afternoon. But the kind of trying and diving for every ball even in the 50th over. I don't think they've dropped any catch in the last two series which is very nice. Good signs for women's cricket in general.
  • Josephine Nkomo | Zimbabwe skipper: I'm a bit sore. Tonight, have a lot of work to do with the physio. Today we bowled well in the powerplay, some decent lines, way better than the last game. Our death bowling today was a bit spot on, which is a positive. In the batting, we had starts, we just failed to convert. I thought we were a bit tentative when we got into the 40s, I felt they could have continued, turning those 40s into 50s and 50s into hundreds. It was a bit hard at first (coping with the weather), but it's not very different from Bulawayo at the moment. We don't have anything to lose and we should go on and fight till the last ball.
  • Vaishnavi Sharma: Feeling really good. Great feeling. Prepared myself mentally, thought about what is needed at this level and what I can work on (when she was not part of the team). Have worked on my speed variations and reading the batter. Was just enjoying the game. Getting a wicket or not is not in my hands, was just following the plan. Haven't changed my action too much. Fourth wicket my favourite - the one which turned and hit the off stump.
  • 21:17 local, 15:47 GMT, 21:17 IST: Another comprehensive win for India as Zimbabwe's wait extends to 5. 329 was always going to be a tough ask, but the visitors started off positively and were 104/1 at the end of 20 overs. Unfortunately for them, things went downhill from that point and they only managed 103/9 in the next 30. Mupachikwa, Tiripano, and Biza all got starts, but they needed at least one among them to take the game deep to have any chance of getting close to 300. The required rate kept getting higher and higher post the 20th over and Zimbabwe could not find the boundaries to stay in touch. Eventually, they lost wickets at regular intervals in the last 13 overs as the spin trio of Deepti, Vaishnavi and Shree Charani shared 8 wickets among them. Vaishnavi was the impressive of the lot and she was rightfully asked to lead the team off the field by Smriti after the end of the game. Stick around for the post-match reactions...
  • 48.5: Jintimani Kalita to Chiedza Dhururu, out Caught by (sub)Harleen Deol!! Chips the length ball straight to cover. Game over. Maiden ODI wicket for Jintimani Kalita as India win by 121 runs to win the series 2-0 with a game to go. Kalita should have gotten a wicket in the first ODI, but Deepti put down a straightforward chance at slip. Both will be mighty relieved now. • 47.3: Deepti Sharma to Tendai Makusha, out Caught by (sub)Harleen Deol!! Easy peasy for Harleen at backward point. A no-feet hack from Tendai Makusha and it only found a thick leading edge, offering catching practice to the sub fielder inside the ring on the off-side.
